Two ledgers either side of a dashed cutover line: the Tally ledger's closing balance is carried across to open the Odoo ledger, its opening row marked by an orange square with new entries below, beside the words Tally to Odoo.

Tally to Odoo migration in the UAE usually starts when the work around Tally outgrows it: orders retyped from a sales sheet, stock checked by phone, a second company kept in a second Tally and merged in Excel. Switch at the start of a VAT period with clean balances and your first return from Odoo is routine; switch mid-quarter with unchecked data and that return is stitched together from two systems.

How does a Tally to Odoo migration work in the UAE?

Quick answer: You move the masters (chart of accounts, customers and suppliers with TRNs, products, warehouses), opening balances, open invoices and bills, and stock on hand. The voucher history stays in Tally as a read-only archive. Set up VAT and Corporate Tax in Odoo first, rehearse the import twice, and switch at the start of a VAT period.

Is e-invoicing a reason to leave Tally?

Not on its own. Tally Software Solutions FZCO is on the Ministry of Finance list of accredited e-invoicing providers, so a business that runs well on Tally has a route to the 2027 rules without changing system. The reasons to move are the ones Tally users feel every week:

  • the same order typed into a quote sheet, then Tally, then a delivery note;
  • stock across several warehouses or branches, checked by phone before a sale;
  • two or more Tally companies combined in Excel at month-end;
  • purchase approvals on WhatsApp, with nothing in the system to show who agreed;
  • payroll, an online store or a field sales team running on separate tools.

What this means for you: if none of these sound familiar, stay on Tally and connect it for e-invoicing. If two or three do, the cost now sits in the work around Tally rather than in Tally itself, and the rest of this guide shows how to move without disturbing a VAT return.

What waiting costs you

Every quarter on Tally plus side spreadsheets is another VAT return checked by hand against files outside the system. The e-invoicing calendar adds a second cost. Businesses with revenue under AED 50 million appoint an accredited provider by 31 March 2027 and go live on 1 July 2027. Move to Odoo before then and you set up e-invoicing once, in the system you will keep. Move after, and you set it up in Tally first, then again in Odoo.

What moves from Tally to Odoo, and what stays

Take this table to your finance lead. Every Tally record lands in one row.

In Tally In Odoo Move it? UAE check before import
Groups and ledgers Chart of accounts Yes, mapped to Odoo’s UAE chart Rename and recode Odoo’s standard accounts rather than deleting them; VAT stays on Odoo’s own VAT accounts
Party ledgers (Sundry Debtors and Creditors) Contacts Yes TRN, emirate and legal name for every business, duplicates merged, businesses saved as companies
Bill-wise outstanding Open invoices and bills Yes, each with the amount still due The totals equal the receivable and payable balances
Stock items, stock groups and units Products, categories and units of measure Yes The VAT treatment on each product; Arabic product names as translations
Godowns Warehouses and locations Yes, the ones still in use One location per godown you still stock
Closing stock Opening inventory count Yes, quantity and cost Quantity times cost equals the stock value on the trial balance
Cost centres Analytic accounts Only if your reports use them Named the way management reads the reports
Ledger closing balances One opening journal entry Yes Receivables and payables go through clearing accounts (step 3)
Post-dated cheques Agreed in the design List them Every PDC received and issued, so none is banked twice or missed
Voucher history Stays in Tally No Kept readable for as long as the FTA requires you to keep records
TDL customisations and add-ons Odoo configuration first, a custom module last Only what a process still needs Each one justified by the job it does today

The history stays behind on purpose. Every old voucher would need mapping to Odoo’s accounts and taxes, and one mismatch shows up in every report after it. Odoo’s own guide to moving from legacy accounting software brings across balances, open items and stock instead, and so do we.

Set up VAT and Corporate Tax before the data arrives

Odoo lets you change the fiscal localisation package only until the first journal entry is posted, so the tax setup comes before any import:

  • Company: your TRN and emirate on the company record.
  • Emirates: Tally keeps the emirate in each party’s mailing details. Bring it across, because Odoo’s UAE setup uses it to choose the 5% tax on each sale.
  • VAT balances: reconcile Tally’s VAT ledgers to your VAT returns, so the VAT payable you bring across is what you actually owe.
  • Corporate Tax: tag income and expense accounts for Odoo’s Corporate Tax report; none are tagged by default.
  • Invoices: Arabic as the second language on tax invoices, checked on your own layout.

Our Odoo VAT and Corporate Tax setup guide covers each of these, including which emirate a sale should report under.

When to switch: pick the date before the data

Odoo’s guide names three options: the end of the financial year, which is easiest; the end of a tax period; or the middle of one, which it advises against, because the tax return then combines two systems. For a UAE business:

  • The start of your financial year is cleanest. The whole year’s accounts and Corporate Tax report come from one system.
  • The start of a VAT quarter works too. Bring the year so far as monthly totals per account, so year-end and Corporate Tax reports still run from Odoo.
  • Mid-quarter is the one to avoid. Your next VAT return would be built from two systems.

Then match it to your e-invoicing date. Going live on 1 July 2027? Switch at a quarter start before then, and set up the connection from Odoo to your e-invoicing provider inside the same project. Going live on 1 January 2027? Don’t change systems in the same weeks: meet that date through Tally’s route, then move at a later quarter start with the Odoo connection planned in.

How to migrate from Tally to Odoo, step by step

  1. Clean the data in Tally. Merge duplicate party ledgers, fill in missing TRNs and emirates, and retire stock items nobody sells. Tally exports masters with their balances to Excel, so this is spreadsheet work your finance team can share out.
  2. Set up Odoo on a test database: localisation, the chart of accounts mapping, taxes, the Arabic invoice layout and Corporate Tax tags, all before anything is imported.
  3. Import in order. Masters first; then open invoices and bills, each with only the amount still due; then the opening stock count; last, the opening trial balance, with receivables and payables replaced by clearing accounts so nothing is counted twice. Invoices in dollars or euros need the exchange rate for their own date.
  4. Rehearse twice and check five totals. Receivables equal open invoices less credit notes; payables equal open bills less refunds; stock value equals quantity times cost; the trial balance balances; and VAT payable equals the return for your last quarter in Tally. Odoo’s guide sets the first four. The fifth is the UAE check.
  5. Run one month-end in parallel, then cut over. Close the month in both systems and compare. On cutover day Tally is frozen and becomes the archive.

Who runs your move

We implement Odoo for UAE businesses from Dubai Digital Park, with our core engineering team in Alexandria. We have implemented and upgraded Odoo for clients whose names stay under NDA. Quality is built into every step:

  • CTO oversight on the chart of accounts mapping and the cutover plan, the two decisions that are hardest to undo.
  • Independent QA before each release: the five totals are rechecked after every rehearsal by someone who didn’t run the import.
  • A dated plan in FloPlan, the delivery software we built and use ourselves, so you see each rehearsal and the cutover date in advance.

Our core team are native Arabic speakers, so Arabic product names and bilingual invoices are checked by people who read them every day.

Outside Odoo, we build finance software from scratch. Al-Mawared ERP is a web-based ERP we built for exchange companies across the MENA region. Talk to the team that built it: book a meeting.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Tally to Odoo migration take?

It follows the number of Tally companies, how clean the party ledgers are and which Odoo apps go live with accounting. Two rehearsals and one month-end run in parallel are fixed parts of every plan, and the cutover date is set around your VAT quarter. Your dates are agreed in your proposal, before any work starts.

Can we bring our full Tally history into Odoo?

You can, but it rarely pays. Every old voucher has to be mapped to Odoo's accounts and taxes, and one mismatch shows up in every report after it. Most companies bring balances, open items and stock, plus monthly totals for the year so far, and keep Tally readable for history and any FTA request.

Do we have to leave Tally for UAE e-invoicing?

No. Tally Software Solutions FZCO is on the Ministry of Finance list of accredited providers, so Tally has its own route. Move to Odoo for stock, approvals, several companies or sales and purchasing in one system. If you do move, set up e-invoicing in Odoo inside the same project, so it is done once.

We keep several companies in Tally. Can Odoo hold them together?

Yes. Odoo runs several companies in one database, each with its own TRN, accounts and VAT return; multi-company needs Odoo's Custom plan. Group figures then come from one place instead of an Excel merge. Each company is migrated and checked on its own, so one entity's data never holds up another's.

What does a Tally to Odoo migration cost?

It follows the number of companies and records, how much cleaning the data needs, the Odoo apps in the first phase and any integrations, such as your e-invoicing provider. Our price is agreed in your proposal. Our Odoo implementation cost guide gives market ranges for licences and services, so you can check any quote against them.

What if the numbers don't match after go-live?

The rehearsals are there to catch that first: by cutover, the five totals have matched twice. If a difference still appears, the clearing accounts show where it sits, and Tally is still there to compare with. It is fixed before the first VAT return you file from Odoo.
